Why sealing grouts?
Tile sealing is an important process in the maintenance and protection of various types of tile surfaces, such as ceramic, porcelain, and especially natural stone tiles. Here are the main reasons why tile sealing is recommended:

Protection against stains
Sealing creates a protective barrier on the surface of the tile and the grout, making it more resistant to spills and stains. This is particularly important for porous tiles (like natural stone) that can easily absorb liquids, leading to discolouration and damage.

Enhances appearance
Some sealants can enhance the natural beauty of the tile, giving it a richer colour and sheen. For natural stone tiles, this can accentuate their natural patterns and colours, making them more vibrant.

Preservation of tile life

Ease of cleaning
Sealed tiles are easier to clean. Dirt, grime, and spills can be wiped off more easily from a sealed surface compared to an unsealed one. This helps in maintaining the aesthetic appeal of the tiles over a longer period.

Moisture resistance
In areas with high moisture, such as bathrooms and kitchens, sealing tiles can prevent the absorption of moisture, which can lead to mold and mildew growth, especially in the grout. Sealing helps in keeping the tiled areas hygienic and easier to maintain.

Grout Protection
It’s important to note that not all types of tiles require sealing. Porcelain and glazed ceramic tiles, for example, are less porous and may not need sealing as much as natural stone does. However, their grout lines still do. The choice of sealant and the frequency of resealing depend on the type of tile, the area where it is installed, and the level of foot traffic it receives. Consulting with a professional or referring to the tile manufacturer’s recommendations can help determine the best sealing practices for your specific tile installation.
